Common problems — answered plainly

The questions people ask us most. If yours isn't here, just call.

My computer won't turn on — what should I do?
First check the power cable and outlet are both working — try a different socket if you can. If there's still no sign of life (no lights, no fans, nothing), it's likely a hardware fault and needs a proper look. Call HomeTech and we'll come diagnose it on-site, usually the same day.
My laptop screen is black — is it broken?
Not necessarily. A black screen can mean the laptop is actually on but the display isn't outputting (a common, fixable issue), or it could be a real screen or graphics fault. Try holding the power button for 10 seconds to force a restart. If it still won't show anything, call HomeTech and we'll figure out exactly what's wrong.
I'm getting a blue screen error — what does that mean?
A blue screen (sometimes called a BSOD) means Windows hit a serious error and had to stop to protect your data. It can be caused by faulty hardware, a driver conflict, or corrupted system files. It's worth getting checked before it happens again and causes data loss — call HomeTech and we'll diagnose the actual cause.
My computer keeps restarting by itself — why?
Random restarts are usually a sign of overheating, a failing power supply, or a hardware fault — not something to ignore, since it can get worse and risk your files. Call HomeTech for an on-site diagnosis rather than guessing at fixes yourself.
My computer is running really slow — can it be fixed?
Almost always, yes. Slow computers are usually caused by too many startup programs, a nearly-full hard drive, malware, or a drive that's on its way out and needs replacing. HomeTech can diagnose the actual cause and get it running properly again, on-site or remotely.
My laptop won't charge — is the battery dead?
It could be the battery, the charging cable, the power adapter, or the charging port itself — all different fixes. Try a different cable/adapter if you have one first. If it's still not charging, call HomeTech and we'll work out exactly which part needs replacing.
I think I've lost all my files — can they be recovered?
Often, yes — stop using the device immediately, since continuing to use it can overwrite recoverable data. Don't try to fix it yourself. Call HomeTech straight away for the best chance of getting your files back from a failed drive, corrupted storage, or accidental deletion.
I forgot my computer password — can you get me back in?
Yes, in almost all cases. Being locked out of your own computer is a common, fixable problem — call HomeTech and we'll get you back into your account without losing your files.
My laptop fan is really loud — is that a problem?
A loud fan usually means the laptop is overheating, often from dust buildup inside or too many background programs running. Left unchecked it can shorten the life of your laptop. Worth getting cleaned out and checked before it causes real damage — call HomeTech to sort it.
My wifi or internet isn't working at home — can you help?
Yes. Sometimes it's your internet provider, but often it's the router, wiring, or a settings issue we can fix on the spot. Call HomeTech and we'll work out whether it's on our end to fix or something to raise with your provider.

Don't wait for it to get worse.

Most computer problems are quick to fix once we're actually looking at them.
