Common worries — answered plainly

The questions people ask us most. If yours isn't here, just call.

Is this email a scam?
If an email pressures you to act fast, asks for passwords or payment, or claims to be from your bank or a tech company about a "problem", treat it as a likely scam. Don't click any links or reply. If you're unsure, call us on 020 4039 2122 and we'll check it over with you.
Someone accessed my computer remotely — what should I do?
Turn off your Wi-Fi or unplug the internet cable straight away, don't open your internet banking, and phone your bank if any payments were involved. Then call HomeTech — we'll guide you through securing everything and removing any access the scammer left behind.
I got a call saying my computer has a virus — is it real?
No. Microsoft, Apple, Spark and your bank do not phone you out of the blue about a virus — this is one of the most common scams aimed at older New Zealanders. Hang up, don't install anything they ask for, and call us to check your computer is safe.
My bank rang about "suspicious activity" and asked me to move money — is it a scam?
A real bank will never ask you to move money to a "safe account" or read out security codes. Hang up and phone your bank yourself using the number on your card. If you've already acted, ring your bank and then call HomeTech so we can secure your devices and accounts.
I gave a scammer remote access — what now?
Disconnect from the internet, don't log in to banking, and change important passwords from a different device if you can. Then call HomeTech — we'll check what was accessed, remove their tools, and lock your computer and accounts back down.

Don't wait — a scam caught early is easily fixed.

Pick up the phone now. We'll check calmly, tell you the truth, and put it right.
